In the present work, synthetic slags (FeO-SiO2-CaO-P2O5-Al2O3-TiO2-V2O5 system) mimicking the composition of the slag inclusions of Ipanema were solidified at different cooling rates. FactSage software was used to calculate the slag’s phase equilibria from 500ºC to 1600°C to guide the microstructural characterisation. The samples solidified with slower cooling rates featured wüstite dendrites and a eutectic-like matrix, with intradendritic (Al,V,Ti)-containing iron spinel precipitates in the wüstite. The rapidly solidified slag showed refined wüstite dendrites surrounded by a Fe-O-Si-Ca-containing amorphous single-phase matrix without intradendritic (Al,V,Ti)-containing iron spinel precipitation. The comparison of the calculated phase diagram with the as-cast microstructures showed a few discrepancies. For instance, the FactSage’s database must be updated to consider the simultaneous solubility of Al, V and Ti in the thermodynamic description of the spinel phases, such as FToxid-SP-V, FToxid-SPINA, FToxid-TiSp and (FeO)2(TiO2)(s). Finally, the intradendritic precipitation of (Al,V,Ti)-containing iron spinel phases in the wüstite of the slag inclusions indicated that an Ipanema’s iron artefact was exposed to high service temperatures between 750 and 1050ºC.

Abstract The article reviews the metallurgical processes used in the first industrial ironworks operated in Brazil, the Patriótica Iron Factory, from 1812 to 1831. It discusses its impact on the ironmaking plants that spread in Minas Gerais's state during the XIX century. The remnants of this Factory in Ouro Preto were the first industrial site listed by the Brazilian Historic Heritage Authority (SPHAN) in 1938. Vale SA, owner of the site, and the National Historic and Artistic Heritage Institute (IPHAN) authorised collecting samples from two ferrous artefacts found in the old Factory, a hammer and an eyebolt nailed to the remnants of one of the reduction furnaces. The eyebolt’s microstructure suggests that this part was produced in the Patriótica Iron Factory, while the hammer’s microstructure indicates that this component was not produced in the Patriótica Iron Factory.

ABSTRACT The increment of recycling of steel using electric arc furnace and the tendency to coat of steel products with zinc, in order to prevent corrosion, has increased the proportion of galvanized scrap used worldwide in the recent years. Approximately 10 to 20 Kg/t of cast steel is generated in casting arcs. These collected dusts electric arc furnace (EAF dust) contains iron, zinc, lead, and cadmium. Mainly in the form of oxides and their wastes are considered hazardous typically in countries such as Brazil, U.S., Japan and Germany. It is estimated that from the total of 7.5 million metric tons of EAF dust generated worldwide only 45% is recycled. With Waelz process, the EAF dust can be treated to recover zinc by means of reduction-volatilization-oxidation reactions occurring within the rotary kiln. In this work the thermodynamics of the Waelz process is studied to optimize the recovery of volatiles especially zinc. Kinetic parameters were evaluated trough series of ten experiments, comprise the major process factors such as type of reductants (charcoal and petroleum coke), time (20 – 120 minutes) and temperature (450 - 1150°C). The mechanical behavior of the pellets was evaluated by compressive cold strength and drop tests. Characterization was performed using scanning electron microscopy, microanalysis EDS, X-ray diffraction, X-ray fluorescence, granulometric analysis by laser diffraction, as well as measurements of moisture, bulk density and percentage of volatiles, fixed carbon and ash. The small pellets (10mm) with charcoal used as a reductant, presented a higher compression and higher recovery of volatiles than those with petroleum coke.

Abstract The thermodynamic optimization of Ti-X-Si systems requires that their respective binary systems be constantly updated. The most recent assessments of the Ti-Si phase diagrams used three sublattices to describe the Ti5Si3 phase. The stable version of this phase diagram indicated the presence of Ti(β)+Ti5Si3→Ti3Si and Ti(β)→Ti(α)+Ti3Si reactions in the Ti-rich corner, while the metastable version featured the presence of a Ti(β)→Ti(α)+Ti5Si3 reaction. The present investigation assessed these phase diagrams using two sublattices to describe the Ti5Si3 phase in order to simplify the optimization of Ti-X-Si systems.

The objective of this work was to evaluate biaxial-flexural-strength (σf), Vickers hardness (HV), fracture toughness (K Ic), Young's modulus (E), Poisson's ratio (ν) and porosity (P) of two commercial glass-ceramics, Empress (E1) and Empress 2 (E2), as a function of the hot-pressing temperature. Ten disks were hot-pressed at 1065, 1070, 1075 and 1080 °C for E1; and at 910, 915, 920 and 925 °C for E2. The porosity was measured by an image analyzer software and s f was determined using the piston-on-three-balls method. K Ic and HV were determined by an indentation method. Elastic constants were determined by the pulse-echo method. For E1 samples treated at different temperatures, there were no statistical differences among the values of all evaluated properties. For E2 samples treated at different temperatures, there were no statistical differences among the values of σf, E, and ν, however HV and K Ic were significantly higher for 910 and 915 °C, respectively. Regarding P, the mean value obtained for E2 for 925 °C was significantly higher compared to other temperatures.
